The Yamaha U1 and Yamaha U3 are two upright pianos found in homes as well as teaching settings. They belong to the same series but come in different sizes. Understanding what those differences bring to playing is more useful than automatically treating the U3 as the better purchase.
Yamaha U1Height: 121 cm · Depth: 62 cm
Yamaha U3Height: 131 cm · Depth: 65 cmWhat the size changes
The U1 is usually about 121 cm tall and the U3 about 131 cm. Current models share the same 153 cm width, while the U3 is slightly deeper. Choosing a U1 therefore does not save much floor space: height is the most visible difference. Check the exact dimensions of the used instrument.
The U3 has a larger soundboard and acoustic chamber. This design can bring greater fullness, particularly in the bass. The U1 offers a lower profile that can also suit demanding practice very well. Piano size is not a measure of the playing level you can achieve.
Different instruments can change your preference
The model does not tell the whole story. Generation, use and adjustments affect the result. A used U1 and U3 may differ in keyboard resistance, roundness or sound intensity in ways that make you prefer one over the other.
When trying them, play the same passage on both: a soft melody, an accompaniment and a few stronger chords. Listen for whether you can bring out what you want without forcing and whether the touch lets you control subtle dynamics.
Which should you choose for home?
Consider the U1 if you want a versatile upright for lessons, returning to the piano or regular practice. The U3 is worth exploring if you want more fullness and bass depth in an upright. The room matters too: hard surfaces and textiles change how you perceive the sound.
