Choosing your Yamaha U1
An upright for developing your playing
The U1 can support the first years of lessons as well as work on more demanding pieces. Explore it at the keyboard: balance an accompaniment, bring out a melody and move from soft playing to a more sustained passage. Try several instruments to find the response that suits you.
U1 or U3: which should you choose?
The U1 is about 121 cm tall, compared with 131 cm for the U3. The U3’s taller format allows longer strings and a larger soundboard, offering more breadth to explore in the bass. The U1 remains an appealing choice if you prefer its tonal balance or a shorter cabinet. Try them side by side: your preference may surprise you.
Comparing used Yamaha U1 pianos
Some U1 pianos may sound brighter to you, others gentler or rounder. Action regulation and hammer voicing also contribute to the result. Take time to play music you enjoy: a few minutes on several pianos can often help clarify what you are looking for.
Is this the right model for you?
Consider the U1 if you want a good acoustic piano for lessons, home practice or regular work on a varied repertoire. A trial helps you check whether it suits your touch and your space.
The different versions of the Yamaha U1
One model, several generations
The Yamaha U1 has evolved over the decades. References such as U1H, U1M, U1A are among the versions found on the used market. They help identify an instrument, but are not enough to make a choice: a well-prepared piano that feels good under your fingers and has a sound you enjoy deserves your attention.
Other models to try with a similar approach
The U10A and U100 are also useful names to know when shopping for a Yamaha upright. Depending on arrivals, we can help you compare them with the Yamaha U1. Playing the same passages on several instruments lets you feel the differences and find the one you most enjoy playing.
UX, UX3, YUS: more Yamaha pianos to explore
UX, UX1 and UX3
Do you like the U3 format? The UX and UX3 are also worth your attention. The UX3 is a 131 cm upright distinguished by its X-shaped back posts and front sound openings. UX1, UX10A and UX30A are other models worth knowing. Depending on the instrument, you may discover different tonal balances and playing sensations.
YUS and YUX: names worth knowing
YUS and YUX are among the other Yamaha uprights found on the used market. They broaden the choice for a pianist wanting to compare different tonal characters. If one interests you, we can check availability and help you include it among the instruments to try.
The YUS1, YUS3 and YUS5 series
The YUS1, YUS3 and YUS5 form another series, distinct from the earlier model named YUS. Yamaha gives particular attention to hammers, strings and voicing to shape tone colour. The YUS1 is 121 cm tall, while the YUS3 and YUS5 are 131 cm: alternatives to consider if you want to explore other nuances of touch and sound.
Find your piano, based on your preferences and budget
