Length is a useful starting point when comparing used Yamaha grand pianos. It helps you plan the installation and shortlist instruments to try. However, it does not explain every difference: the GH1 and C-series models are not one identical range offered in several sizes.

Dimensions to guide your selection
The GH1 is around 1.60 m (≈ 5 ft 3 in) long. Common reference lengths for the classic C series are approximately 1.61 m (≈ 5 ft 3 in) for the C1, 1.73 m (≈ 5 ft 8 in) for the C2, 1.86 m (≈ 6 ft 1 in) for the C3 and 2.00 m (≈ 6 ft 7 in) for the C5. Use these figures to begin your search; the listing and instrument generation should confirm the dimensions used to plan the installation.
The names C1X, C2X, C3X and C5X refer to a newer series. Even when lengths are similar, its specifications should not automatically be attributed to an older C1 or C3.
What to look for in a longer piano
Greater length generally allows longer bass strings and a larger soundboard. During a trial, you may look for more depth and sustain in the bass, along with a broader expressive palette. Still, listen to the actual instrument: longer does not automatically mean better suited to your room.
Consider the GH1 and C1 sizes when available space points towards a small grand. The C2 is an intermediate size. The C3 and C5 are worth trying if your room can accommodate them and you want to explore greater acoustic possibilities.
Plan space for playing, not just the piano
Add room for the bench and its movement behind the piano. Also check circulation around the instrument and delivery access. A scale plan or an outline marked on the floor can often help distinguish between two sizes before a visit.
To compare, play soft passages, repeated notes and a stronger excerpt. Your choice should remain enjoyable in all these situations. Explore the Yamaha grand pianos offered by Piano Expert, then try the available instruments by appointment.
