Advice for choosing your Yamaha

How much space should you allow for a Yamaha piano at home?

Measuring the intended location is a good start to finding out whether a piano fits in a room. You also need space to sit, move the bench back and circulate. A piano that fits on a floor plan is not necessarily well placed for everyday playing.

Uprights: consider width and depth

As a reference, the current Yamaha U1 is 153 cm wide, 62 cm deep and 121 cm tall. The current U3 is also 153 cm wide, but 65 cm deep and 131 cm tall. The U1 is therefore lower without being much narrower. An older instrument may have different measurements.

Mark the intended model’s width and depth on the floor, then add your bench. Sit at your usual playing distance and check whether someone else can still pass without moving furniture. This practical test is more useful than imposing the same clearance on every room.

Grand pianos: include the bench in the plan

A grand piano’s stated length covers the instrument, without the bench or player’s space. A piano around 1.86 m long therefore needs more than that length to be used comfortably.

A scale template helps you visualize keyboard orientation, lid opening and circulation. Before settling on a C2, C3 or another model, also check doors, turns, stairs and final placement with the transport team.

Choose a stable location

Avoid direct sunlight and immediate proximity to a heat source or draft that causes large fluctuations. The piano’s wood and other materials respond to their surroundings. A stable room is preferable to a location with sudden temperature and humidity changes.

The room’s acoustics deserve attention too. Curtains, rugs and furniture can change perceived reverberation. You do not need to turn your living room into a studio: the aim is to find a practical, enjoyable place to play.

Send us your room measurements and access details before choosing. Piano Expert can discuss installation and delivery of your next Yamaha piano with you.
