Maintaining a piano in proper condition is essential for preserving its sound quality and structure over the years. One of the key factors in preserving your instrument is to rigorously control the temperature and humidity of the environment where it is placed. 1. Ideal temperature for a piano

The piano should be kept at a stable temperature, generally between 18°C and 22°C. Extreme variations can alter the wood, strings, and internal mechanics of the instrument. A temperature that is too low or too high can cause cracks or expand the materials, which affects performance and the tuning.

 

2. Recommended humidity for a piano

The ideal relative humidity for a piano is between 40% and 50%. If the air is too dry (less than 40%), the wood can dry out and crack. Conversely, excessive humidity (more than 50%) can cause the wood to swell, disrupt the internal mechanics, and make tuning more difficult. Using a humidifier or dehumidifier is strongly recommended to maintain these levels.

 

3. Avoid sudden changes

Pianos are particularly sensitive to rapid changes in temperature and humidity. These changes can stress the wood and other materials, which could damage the instrument over time.

 

4. Protect the piano from the elements

It is also important to place the piano away from drafts, direct heat sources such as radiators, and direct sunlight. These factors can lead to premature degradation of the instrument.
