Controlled temperature and humidity conditions are essential to preserving the integrity of a piano.

Here are the standard recommendations for optimal storage:

1. Temperature
Avoid abrupt temperature changes: when a cold room is suddenly heated, humidity condenses on the piano strings and other metal parts, causing rust to form. The felt parts absorb moisture, which dampens their action, resulting in a parasitic sound. Be particularly attentive to abrupt temperature changes when you install your piano in a closed room in a concrete building, or if you live in a Nordic climate. It is important that the room in which your piano is located is properly ventilated and that the temperature is stable.

2. Humidity
The ideal relative humidity for a piano is between 40% and 50%. An environment that is too dry (humidity below 40%) can cause the wooden parts to dry out and crack, while excessive humidity (above 50%) can cause the wood to swell, affect the piano's mechanics, and lead to TUNING problems. A humidity control system such as a humidifier or dehumidifier is often used to maintain these stable levels.

3. Protection against the elements
When storing, it is important to keep the piano away from drafts, direct sunlight, heat sources such as radiators, and areas near doors or windows where conditions may fluctuate.

By maintaining these controlled temperature and humidity conditions, you will extend the life of your piano and prevent potential damage that could alter the sound quality and structure of the instrument.
